Tap Dance Classes in Blackburn
There's nothing quite like the sound of a room full of tap shoes landing in time with the music. At Kallista Dance Academy (KDA) in Blackburn South, tap is taught to dancers aged 5 through to adults, building rhythm, timing and musicality one shuffle and ball-change at a time.
Do I Have to Have Specific Tap Shoes?
Yes, once a dancer moves into a dedicated tap class - but not before, and not all at once. Pre-School dancers don't need tap shoes at all, since dedicated tap classes begin at Sub Junior age. From there, younger dancers wear camel-coloured slip-on tap shoes, progressing to black lace-up full-sole tap shoes for teens, seniors and adults, where the extra ankle support suits more intricate rhythm work. Tap shoes are available from Upstage Dancewear (Nunawading and Dandenong), Danceart, Dancewear Central, Knox Dancewear, Bloch and several other suppliers listed on our uniform page - most stores can fit your child properly in person, which we'd always recommend for a first pair.
Tap Through the Levels
Pre-School (age 3+): no dedicated tap yet, but the rhythm and coordination built in combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro classes makes tap easy to pick up once they're ready.
Sub Junior and Junior: a genuine tap vocabulary begins - shuffles, ball-changes and simple time steps, with an emphasis on counting rhythm to the music.
Inter, Sub Senior and Senior: increasingly intricate rhythmic choreography, adding harder steps like pick-ups and wings.
Advanced: improvisation and complex rhythm combinations, popular with ex-competitive dancers who want to keep their technique sharp.
Tap for Adults: Thursday Fitness Class
Our Adult Tap Fitness class runs Thursdays 8.15–9pm, with an optional Tap Performance component straight after, 9–9.15pm. Complete beginners are very welcome - tap is one of the most popular adult classes precisely because it's as much about hearing your own progress as seeing it. Casual passes are available ($28 a class, or $125 for a five-class pass), alongside term enrolment.
