Tap Dance Classes in Blackburn

There's nothing quite like the sound of tap shoes hitting the floor in time with the music. At Kallista Dance Academy (KDA) in Blackburn South, our tap classes teach rhythm, timing and musicality to dancers aged 5 through to adults, with students joining us from Blackburn, Burwood, Forest Hill, Surrey Hills and the surrounding suburbs.

Why Learn Tap?

Tap dance is one of the best styles for developing a genuine ear for music. Every step is a sound, so dancers learn strong rhythm, timing and musicality. It also builds coordination, discipline and a great sense of achievement as new rhythms and combinations click into place.

Classes for Every Age

  • Pre-School (ages 3+): dedicated tap classes begin at Sub Junior age, but our Pre-School dancers already build the rhythm and coordination in their combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro classes that make tap easy to pick up when they're ready.

  • Lower Primary School: from Sub Junior age, students learn a genuine tap vocabulary: shuffles, ball changes and simple time steps. They understand each step has a rhythm and learn how to effectively count them to the music.

  • Upper Primary and Teens: our Inter, Sub Senior and Senior tap dancers move onto increasingly intricate rhythmic choreography. Adding harder steps like pick-ups and wings into their movement vocabulary.

  • Advanced: our Advanced tap classes are a great avenue for ex-competitive dancers or those who just want to dance for enjoyment or stay fit and perform in a relaxed environment. Classes include improvisation and intricate rhythm combinations.

  • Adults: adult tap classes are a brilliant way to build coordination and have fun with music. Complete beginners are very welcome. Casual attendance is welcome.

What to Expect in Your First Class

New students are welcome to arrive five minutes early so their teacher can say hello before the class begins. Bring a water bottle and tap shoes (if they own) in a bag they can manage themselves. Our teachers will help younger dancers get set up and settled in.

Uniform & What You'll Need

Tap shoes progress from camel-coloured slip-ons for younger dancers to full lace-up tap shoes for teens and adults. Exact requirements by level are outlined on our uniform page.

Performance Opportunities

Every tap student performs in our Mid Year Display and End of Year Concert, giving dancers of all ages a chance to show family and friends what they've learned throughout the year.
