Jazz Dance Classes in Blackburn
Jazz is usually the first style a new KDA family asks about - upbeat, expressive, and often the class a child already half-knows how to do before their first lesson, just from moving around the lounge room to the radio. We teach it from our Blackburn South studio to dancers aged 3 through to adults.
What Jazz Actually Builds
Underneath the energy, jazz is genuinely technical - turns, leaps, isolations and sharp, precise musicality that takes real coordination to execute well. It's also one of the most useful foundation styles at KDA: strong jazz technique feeds directly into hip hop, contemporary and even VCE VET Dance, where jazz is one of the technique classes that can support a student's assessed solo work.
Jazz Through the Levels
Pre-School (age 3+): jazz taught inside a combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro class, introducing rhythm, movement and simple choreography.
Sub Junior to Sub Inter: structured jazz technique, turns and leaps within the combined-genre class format.
Inter, Sub Senior and Senior: faster combinations, stronger performance quality, and the option to join a jazz competition troupe.
Advanced: a relaxed, technical class for ex-competitive dancers or anyone who wants to keep dancing at a high level without the pressure of competing.
Jazz and Competitions
Jazz is one of the two technique classes (alongside Hip Hop) that make a student eligible for a Jazz competition routine - you need to be enrolled in one or the other to take that pathway. Competition troupes are entirely optional, and private lessons are available for solo, duo or trio routines for intermediate and senior students who want to go further. This year, KDA is competing at the Warrnambool Eisteddfod.
Jazz for Adults: Wednesday Fitness Class
Our Adult Jazz Fitness class runs Wednesdays 7–7.45pm, with an optional Jazz Performance component straight after, 7.45–8.15pm, for those who'd like to work toward performing. Casual passes are available, or you can enrol for the term. No previous dance background is needed.
What to Wear
Jazz uniform progresses from pink ballet shoes with elastics in our youngest levels through to camel or black slip-on split-sole jazz shoes for older students, paired with black leggings from Sub Inter age. Full detail for every level is on our uniform page.
Why Families Choose KDA for Jazz
Jazz has been a core part of KDA's program for over 37 years, taught by a genuinely experienced team who understand how to keep a class both technically rigorous and properly fun - not one at the expense of the other.
