Jazz Dance Classes in Blackburn
Jazz is one of the most popular styles at Kallista Dance Academy (KDA) — full of energy, personality and technique that builds a strong all-round dance foundation. Our jazz classes run for dancers aged 3 through to adults at our fully equipped, air-conditioned studio in Blackburn South, with families joining us from Blackburn, Box Hill, Nunawading, Doncaster and right across the eastern suburbs.
Why Learn Jazz?
Jazz dance builds rhythm, coordination, flexibility and performance confidence, all while dancing to upbeat, popular music. It's often the style that first hooks a child on dance — energetic and expressive, with plenty of room for personality to shine through. As a technical foundation, jazz also supports every other style we teach, from ballet to contemporary.
Classes for Every Age
Pre-School (ages 3+): jazz is taught as part of a combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro class, introducing movement, rhythm and simple choreography in a fun, nurturing setting — the perfect first taste of dance.
Lower Primary from Sub Junior through to Sub Inter: students build on those foundations with more structured jazz technique, turns, leaps and choreography, still within our combined-genre class format.
Upper Primary and Teens our Inter, Sub Senior and Senior: Dancers take jazz technique further with faster combinations and stronger performance quality, with the option to join a jazz competition troupe.
Advanced: our Advanced jazz classes are a great avenue for ex-competitive dancers or those who just want to dance for enjoyment or stay fit and perform in a relaxed environment.
Adults: our Adult jazz classes welcome anyone wanting to learn or return to dance in a relaxed, supportive environment. No experience necessary. Casual attendance is welcome.
What to Expect in Your First Class
New to KDA? We recommend arriving five minutes before class starts so your child's teacher can say hello before they join the group. This small step makes a big difference for nervous first timers. All they need to bring is a water bottle, their dance shoes in an easy-to-carry bag, and a willingness to have fun. Our teachers are there to help every step of the way.
Uniform & What You'll Need
Uniform requirements vary slightly by age and level. From a simple leotard and ballet shoes for our youngest dancers through to jazz shoes as students’ progress. Full uniform details for every level are on our Uniform page.
Performance Opportunities
All jazz students are invited to take part in our Mid-Year Display (no costume required, just a chance to show off what they've learned) and our End of Year Concert. Older students who want to take things further can also join a jazz competition troupe, with the option of private lessons for solo, duo or trio routines.
