Dance Classes for School-Age Kids & Teens
From the first week of primary school through to the final years of high school, our School Age program is where most KDA dancers spend the bulk of their time with us. Classes stay fun and supportive at every level. The same welcoming, no-pressure environment families know us for at Preschool, but the structure grows with your child, introducing more technique, more performance opportunities, and eventually, more choice over the styles they focus on.
Levels for this age group
Sub Junior: 4–6 years
Junior: 5–7 years
Sub Inter: 7–10 years
Inter: 9–11 years
Sub Senior: 11–13 years
Senior: High school age
Sub Junior, Junior and Sub Inter classes combine styles in the one lesson: a mix of ballet, jazz, tap and acro foundations so dancers build a well-rounded base before they specialise. From Inter (around age 9) onward, students can start choosing the individual styles that interest them most, whether that's staying broad or focusing in on Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary or Acro.
For the detail on any individual style, including uniform, exams, costs and our VCE VET Dance pathway for senior students, see our dedicated Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Acrobatic Dance pages, or our Fees and Uniform pages.
What makes this age range different
A five year old and a fifteen year old need very different things from a dance class, and our level structure is built around that. Younger School Age classes (Sub Junior through Sub Inter) focus on coordination, confidence and a love of movement through varied, combined styles. Older students (Inter and up) get more technical depth, more say in their own styles, and, for those who want it, a genuine pathway into performance, competitions, VCE VET Dance, and eventually our Adult classes.

Each level is matched to an age band (see the table above), and classes get a little more technical and a little longer as dancers move up. Sub Junior, Junior and Sub Inter combine styles in the one class to build a rounded dancer; from Inter onward, students begin choosing individual styles.
