RAD Ballet Classes in Blackburn
Kallista Dance Academy (KDA) has taught classical ballet under the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus from our Blackburn South studio since 1989 — over 37 years, and two fully equipped studios later. If you've searched "RAD ballet" and landed here wondering what that actually means for your child, this page is written to answer that properly, not just mention it in passing.
What Does "RAD" Actually Mean?
RAD stands for the Royal Academy of Dance, an internationally recognised ballet syllabus used by schools across the world — it's a specific, structured curriculum, not just a style name. Training under RAD means your child progresses through a defined sequence of technique and vocabulary at each level, assessed against the same standard whether they're dancing in Blackburn, London or Sydney. At KDA, our class levels (from Pre-School through to Senior and Advanced) are built around this progression, so technique is layered in deliberately rather than taught ad hoc.
Are RAD Exams Compulsory?
No. RAD assessments, examinations, class awards and presentation classes are available from our Sub Inter level upward, but none of them are compulsory — a student can train under the full RAD syllabus for years without ever sitting a formal exam, if that's what suits them. Families who do want the credential can choose an exam; families who'd rather their child simply enjoy the training without added pressure can opt for a class award or presentation class instead, or skip formal assessment altogether. More detail on which option suits your child is something we're always happy to talk through directly.
Ballet Through the Levels
Pre-School (age 3+): posture, basic positions and simple sequences — the genuine first taste of ballet, taught inside a combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro class.
Sub Junior to Sub Inter: increasing technical detail through the RAD syllabus, building the vocabulary that everything later depends on.
Inter and above: demi-pointe work begins, with pointe shoes introduced for Senior and Advanced dancers who are ready for them, always under close teacher supervision.
Senior and Advanced: full syllabus training with optional RAD exams, class awards or presentation classes, plus the option to add Demi-Pointe or Pointe classes.
Adults: see below — a dedicated weekly class, not just an "advanced" label tacked onto the kids' program.
Ballet for Adults: Tuesday Fitness Class
KDA runs a dedicated Adult Ballet Fitness class every Tuesday, 8.30–9.15pm, with an optional Ballet Performance component straight after from 9.15–9.30pm for anyone who wants to take it further. Casual passes are available ($28 a class, or $125 for a five-class pass), or you can enrol by the term. No previous ballet experience is required — plenty of our adult dancers are returning to ballet after a long break, or trying it for the very first time.
Uniform Through the Levels
Ballet uniform is colour-coded by level — pale pink for Pre-School, pale blue for Sub Junior and Junior, mulberry for Sub Inter, deep purple for Inter, navy for Sub Senior, and burgundy for Senior and Advanced dancers, each with a matching ballet skirt and salmon pink (or convertible) tights. Shoes progress from pink ballet shoes through to canvas split-sole shoes with elastics for our older dancers, with demi-pointe or pointe shoes (ribbons required) added once a dancer is ready for them. Full detail for every level is on our uniform page.
Why Families Choose KDA for Ballet
KDA is a long-established RAD school — not a studio that added ballet as an afterthought. Our teachers guide every dancer through the syllabus at their own pace, whether that means working toward an exam or simply building a lifelong love of classical technique, all under our formal Child Safe Standards Statement of Commitment.
