Contemporary Dance Classes in Blackburn

Contemporary dance blends elements of ballet, jazz and modern movement to build expressive, versatile dancers. At Kallista Dance Academy (KDA) in Blackburn South, our contemporary classes are available from Sub Junior age through to adults, with students joining us from Blackburn, Mount Waverley, Camberwell and the wider eastern suburbs.

Why Learn Contemporary?

Contemporary dance encourages dancers to move beyond strict technique into genuine self-expression and storytelling through movement. It builds flexibility, strength and emotional expression, and pairs beautifully with a ballet or jazz foundation, making it a natural next step as dancers grow.

Classes for Every Age

  • Pre-School (ages 3+): our youngest dancers build the coordination and body awareness that contemporary dance relies on within their combined Jazz/Ballet/Acro classes. Dedicated Contemporary classes begin from Sub Junior age.

  • Primary School: from Sub Junior and Junior level, students are introduced to contemporary technique and movement quality, danced barefoot or in foot thongs for freedom of movement.

  • Teens: Inter through Senior dancers develop stronger technical and expressive range, with the option to include contemporary in a competition routine (available to students enrolled in an equivalent ballet or contemporary technique class).

  • Advanced: advanced/adult contemporary classes offer a creative, expressive outlet for dancers of a higher experience level wanting to keep up their technique and artistry.

What to Expect in Your First Class

New students are welcome to arrive five minutes early to meet their teacher before class begins. Contemporary is danced barefoot or in foot thongs, so all your child needs to bring is a water bottle and comfortable, flexible clothing to move in.

Uniform & What You'll Need

Contemporary classes are danced barefoot or in foot thongs with a level specific leotard and black leggings. Full uniform details for every level are on our uniform page.

Performance Opportunities

Contemporary students perform in our Mid Year Display and End of Year Concert, with the option to take contemporary further into a competition routine.
